5 Freeway construction continues in Santa Ana this week

The I-5 Central Corridor HOV Project is scheduled for nighttime construction to remove k-rail on I-5 between SR-55 and SR-57 for three nights, starting tonight: Monday, September 14th through Wednesday, September 16, 2020 from 8:30 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The following closures are scheduled during nighttime hours:

• Northbound I-5: Left lanes between First and Fourth streets and SR-22
• Northbound I-5 Grand Avenue/Santa Ana carpool lane off-ramp
• Southbound I-5: Left lanes between the SR-57 Connector and Fourth Street
• Southbound I-5: Grand Avenue/Santa Ana carpool on-ramp
• Northbound SR-55 Carpool Connector to Northbound I-5

During these times, drivers may avoid using the I-5 freeway between SR-55 and SR-22 in both directions and utilize the SR-55 and SR-22, instead, through Central Orange County.

Crews will continue daytime activities this week on Main Street including the removal of the temporary support structure that was used to construct the bridge barrier, sidewalk improvements, chain link fence installation, paving and traffic signal work. The work is on Main Street south of Walkie Way for the Northbound lanes (alternating 2-hour lane closures) and the Southbound Main Street right-most lane near Edgewood Road from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. continuing on Thursday, September 17th and Friday, September 18, 2020. Only one of two lanes will be closed on Northbound I-5 to the Broadway off-ramp.

OCTA and Caltrans construction team has been expediting this work while traffic demand has been a lower from COVID-19 impacts. Should you have questions or issues with the construction please call (800) 724-0353 or e-mail central5fwy@octa.net.

When fully completed, this project will add an additional carpool lane in each direction on I-5 between SR-55 and SR-57 to reduce traffic congestion, bottlenecks, encourage ride-sharing and improve traffic flow. Construction is expected to be completed in early 2021. To sign up for construction alerts or for more information, visit www.octa.net/i5Central.

Dates and times are subject to change if there is inclement weather or if there are unforeseen construction constraints.
