There is good news for Santa Ana’s schoolteachers, courtesy of their union, the Santa Ana Educators’ Association (SAEA). Their President, Susan Mercer, reported in her latest email newsletter that even though the State of California did cut the school budget – it could have been worse. Here is Mercer’s newsletter with the details:
At yesterday’s school board meeting, the District presented their financial documents for the Board’s review and approval.
Even though the State’s financial picture is still bleak, there are two pieces of good news:
1) As of this week, the Governor pulled the budget trigger. This means a loss of $2 million for the District instead of the $17 million previously anticipated.
2) The District stated that as of now, they are not planning for any certificated layoffs in March, even with the loss of the QEIA funding.
Again, although this is not the best news for education as a whole, it is good news for those in Santa Ana. SAEA will continue to be vigilant and cautious as the State implements the new revenue cuts and we await for the 2012-13 Governor’s budget due to be presented in January.
