Santa Ana is Orange County’s First Sanctuary City

In 2016, Santa Ana became the first city in Orange County to declare itself a sanctuary city.
The city adopted an ordinance that prohibits city staff and resources from being used to enforce immigration law.

Sanctuary policies are based on the idea that the federal government cannot force local jurisdictions to participate in immigration enforcement.

There is no official definition of what constitutes a sanctuary city.

In general, sanctuary cities limit the extent to which a local government will share information with federal immigration law officers.

California is also a sanctuary state, meaning that the state prohibits local law enforcement agencies from using resources to investigate, detain, report, or arrest people for immigration violations.
