The Santa Ana City Council voted 4-2 last night to prepare a resolution condemning President Trump’s executive orders withholding funds from sanctuary cities and barring immigrants from seven predominantly Muslim countries from entering the U.S., according to the O.C. Register.

The only Council Members who opposed this pointless measure were Mayor Miguel Pulido and Councilman Juan Villegas. Councilmember Michele Martinez left before the matter was voted upon.

As one might expect the resolution was championed by Council Members David Benavides and Sal Tinajero.

Villegas summed up his opposition perfectly, saying that “the issue was “very difficult for me” because he is the son of immigrants and a veteran, but said the city should focus on the many issues it faces within its borders – shootings and gang activity, among other crimes.”

Villegas nailed it! Federal matters are not city business. Our City Council is wasting time on these ridiculous resolutions – and on going after food trucks – instead of doing what they were elected to do. Their main job right now is making Santa Ana safe again.

Did you know that just in the past days 391 crimes were committed in Santa Ana? This is according to CrimeMapping.com. They also reported that 17 of these crimes were Weapons incidents; 56 were Assaults; 28 were Motor Vehicle Thefts; 8 were DUIs; 148 were Disturbing the Peace; 18 were Vehicle Break-ins and 9 were Vandalism.

Council Members Benavides, Tinajero, Vince Sarmiento and Jose Solorio all voted last night to focus on ridiculous political posturing instead of doing their jobs.

Like Villegas I am conflicted by Trump’s actions. My parents came here from Mexico too. But the reality is that most of the crimes happening in our city are being inflicted on working families including immigrants. None of us are safe in Santa Ana and it does not help to have a City Council that wastes our time on matters that are not local.
