Update – Watch today’s meeting about the SAUSD’s plans to deal with the COVID-19 virus here.

In response to last night’s guidance issued by the California Department of Public Health we have the following update. The Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) is continuing to follow State and Health Department guidelines. SAUSD is taking immediate, proactive measures to mitigate the impact on the SAUSD community and safeguard the health and wellbeing of our students, families, and staff.

As referenced in prior communication, the rapidly-changing information and guidance provided to us by the OC Health Care Agency (OCHCA), and California Department of Public Health along with local and state public health officials require that we be equally dynamic in our efforts to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 on our campus. 

As information with COVID-19 continues to develop, we want to make sure we are preparing for different scenarios.  Following the lead of the Orange County Health Care Agency, California Department of Education, Centers for Disease Control, and the California Department of Public Health, we are preparing contingencies for every possibility, while ensuring student and staff safety, while addressing the academic needs of students.

While we continue to have zero presumptive or confirmed cases of COVID-19 on SAUSD campuses, we are augmenting our preventative measures to include the following:

Gatherings (as of 3/12/20-until further notice)

A “gathering” is any meeting, event and/or convening that brings together people in a single room or single space at the same time, such as an auditorium, stadium, arena, large conference room, meeting hall, cafeteria, or any other indoor or outdoor space.

• All fieldtrips and conferences are cancelled until further notice.
• Postpone or cancel large gatherings that include 250 people or more.
  • This includes gatherings such as meetings, concerts, performances, and conferences.
  • Athletic events have not been cancelled. However, the number of spectators should be limited to fewer than 250 people.

Instructional Plan

One contingency we must prepare for is the possibility of closing one or more schools in response to an outbreak. In the event of such a decision, it becomes imperative that we address the educational needs of our students during a school closure.

The district is preparing a packet of core academic materials across content areas for distribution to students. These materials will be distributed in the event a decision is made in the future to close one or more schools in response to an outbreak.  In addition, we would encourage teachers to offer alternative lessons in lieu of the district packet.  These lessons could include, but are not limited to; online learning interactions and/or independent study materials and additional printed assignments to be completed at home.

We will continue to closely monitor developing COVID-19 updates through various media platforms and will communicate promptly should the need to activate any contingency plan for instructional delivery. 

Health Services – Strategies

In the meantime, hand washing, proper respiratory etiquette, and staying home while ill remain the best illness prevention strategies. Staff and students are being reminded to wash their hands often, before meals, and after coughing or using the restroom.

Signs about proper handwashing are being sent to all the school sites for placement at entrances, restrooms, and key points of reference. Staff and students are being reminded to use a tissue when coughing or sneezing and avoid touching their face, eyes, nose & mouth. The illness prevention practice of sending and keeping staff and students’ home with fever and cough is being reviewed and strictly implemented.

Facilities

The Building Services Department is disinfecting “touch-points” on a daily basis and is enhancing the disinfecting process with the use of “foggers” so a greater level of protection is provided to SAUSD students and staff.  The Building Services Custodial Department has been provided training by our custodial supplies vendor to ensure the staff is as effective and efficient at providing a healthy learning environment as possible.  Building Services has ordered additional disinfectant and gloves so that there is no interruption in providing these services to our students and staff.

Emergency Operations Command (EOC)

Over the past several weeks, SAUSD has activated its EOC in order to ensure clear communication amongst departments and local health and safety agencies.  These emergency management measures are being utilized for the protection of our students and staff.

El Distrito Escolar Unificado de Santa Ana (SAUSD) continúa acatando las directrices del Departamento de Salud y del Estado. SAUSD está tomando medidas inmediatas y proactivas para mitigar el impacto en la comunidad de SAUSD, y cuidar la salud y bienestar de nuestros alumnos, familias y personal.

Como se mencionó en comunicación previa, la información y orientación cambian rápidamente por parte de la Agencia de Salud de OC (OCHCA) y el Departamento de Salud Pública de California, junto con los representantes de salud pública locales y estatales, y esto requiere que seamos igual de dinámicos en nuestros esfuerzos para prevenir la transmisión de COVID-19 en nuestro plantel.

A medida que sigue desarrollándose la información sobre COVID-19, queremos asegurarnos de estar preparados para diferentes escenarios. Siguiendo el ejemplo de la Agencia de Salud del Condado de Orange, el Departamento de Educación de California, los Centros para Control de Enfermedades y el Departamento de Salud Pública de California, estamos preparando contingencias para cada posibilidad, mientras velamos por la seguridad estudiantil y del personal, y abordamos las necesidades académicas de los alumnos.

Aunque continuamos con cero casos presuntivos o confirmados de COVID-19 en planteles de SAUSD, estamos aumentando nuestras medidas preventivas para incluir lo siguiente:

Reuniones (a partir del 12 de marzo del 2020 y hasta nuevo aviso)

Una “reunión” es cualquier junta, evento y/o convocatoria que reúne gente en un solo salón o un solo espacio al mismo tiempo, como un auditorio, estadio, arena, sala de conferencias grande, salón de reunión, cafetería o cualquier otro espacio interior o exterior.

• Todas las excursiones y conferencias están canceladas hasta nuevo aviso.
• Posponga o cancele reuniones grandes que incluyan 250 personas o más.
  • Esto incluye reuniones como juntas, conciertos, representaciones y conferencias.
  • Los eventos deportivos no se han cancelado. Sin embargo, la cantidad de espectadores se debe limitar a menos de 250 personas.

Plan didáctico

Una contingencia para la cual debemos prepararnos es la posibilidad de cerrar una o más escuelas en respuesta a un brote. En caso de dicha decisión, se vuelve imperativo abordar las necesidades educativas de nuestros alumnos durante un cierre escolar.

El distrito está preparando un paquete de materiales didácticos centrales en todas las materias, para distribuir a los alumnos. Estos materiales se distribuirán en caso de tomar la decisión en el futuro de cerrar una o más escuelas en respuesta a un brote. Además, alentamos a los maestros a ofrecer lecciones alternativas en lugar del paquete del distrito. Estas lecciones podrían incluir, en parte, interacciones de aprendizaje en línea y/o materiales de estudios independientes, y asignaturas impresas adicionales para completar en casa.

Continuaremos vigilando de cerca el desarrollo de actualizaciones sobre COVID-19 mediante diferentes plataformas mediáticas, y comunicaremos oportunamente si surgiese la necesidad de activar cualquier plan de contingencia para presentar la enseñanza.

Servicios de Salud – Estrategias

Mientras tanto, las mejores estrategias de prevención de enfermedades siguen siendo lavarse las manos, la conducta respiratoria adecuada y quedarse en casa si está enfermo/a. Se recuerda al personal y los alumnos lavarse las manos a menudo, antes de comer, y después de toser o ir al baño.

Se están enviando letreros a todas las escuelas sobre la manera adecuada de lavarse las manos, para ponerse en las entradas, los baños y puntos de referencia clave. Se recuerda al personal y los alumnos usar un pañuelo desechable al toser o estornudar, y evitar tocarse la cara, ojos, nariz y boca. Se está repasando la práctica de prevención de enfermedad de enviar a y dejar en casa al personal y alumnos con fiebre y tos, y se está implementando estrictamente.

Instalaciones

El Departamento de Servicios de Edificios está desinfectando “puntos de contacto” a diario, y está mejorando el proceso de desinfección con el uso de “nebulizadores” para brindar un mayor nivel de protección a los alumnos y personal de SAUSD. El Departamento de Conserjes de Servicios de Edificios ha recibido capacitación por parte de nuestro proveedor de suministros de limpieza para asegurar que el personal sea lo más efectivo y eficiente posible para brindar un ambiente de aprendizaje saludable.

Servicios de Edificios ha ordenado desinfectantes y guantes adicionales para que no haya interrupción en la provisión de estos servicios a nuestros alumnos y personal.

Comando de Operaciones de Emergencia (EOC)
