The Santa Ana Unified School District Board of Education approved on Tuesday a comprehensive plan for safely resuming instruction for the upcoming school year. The plan includes provisions for in-person instruction, virtual learning, and hybrid models of several options. The plan is designed to prioritize the safety and well-being of students and staff. It allows for instruction to efficiently shift between models as we continue to navigate through this ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Decisions on which models to implement at the time of instruction will be determined by guidance from local, state, and federal health care experts, along with input from the community, the Board and District leadership. Hybrid models include dividing students into cohorts that attend campuses on different days of the week to ensure the use of social distancing protocols in classrooms, and in other common areas. For elementary schools, a hybrid option would involve having half of the students attend school on Mondays and Tuesdays, and the other half attend on Thursdays and Fridays. When not in school, students would learn virtually. Wednesdays would be reserved as teacher professional work days.

The plan also allows for students to receive instruction entirely through SAUSD’s Virtual Academy for those who prefer a fully virtual learning environment. Other provisions are included for students with special needs. The first day of instruction is tentatively set for Aug. 10, but it could be delayed depending on whether the district needs to provide additional professional development for teachers, or other circumstances.
