Next week’s Santa Ana City Council meeting was moved to January 4, which is on Tuesday. Ordinarily the first Council meeting of the year would likely be a boring affair, but not this time. Our blogger, Sean Mill, is going to be re-appointed to the Santa Ana Planning Commission.
Mill served honorably on that Commission, and helped to shepherd the new Courtyard by Marriott, which is being built at MacArthur Boulevard and MacArthur Place.
I spoke to Mill today and he said that his goal as a Planning Commissioner will be to help to guide new developments through the planning process, as they will bring badly-needed jobs and economic growth to our city.
Mill works for a title company and he has been involved in Santa Ana politics virtually his entire adult life. He worked on Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido’s first campaign, many years ago, and also helped former Assemblyman Dick Longshore, who died in 1988, after winning the June primary that year.
Mill is a graduate of the University of California, at Irvine, where he earned a political science degree. In his college years he worked on the Wally George T.V. show. Mill also worked for Coach Jerry Tarkanian and the NCAA champion Running Rebels.
Mill works today for a title company. He has a great understanding of planning issues and development. Congratulations to Mill. I know that he will be a positive addition to the Santa Ana Planning Commission.
The agenda for next week’s Council meeting has not been posted yet. I suspect it will be up later this evening, at this link.

Mr. Pedroza, educate us some more. Who appoints the planning commissioners? Is there one per district (region, whatever the correct term)? Do they only vote (recommend) on issues concerning their district or all of Santa Ana?

The Commissioners are appointed by the City Council Members and the Mayor. Mill was appointed by Councilman Tinajero.
There is one per ward and the Mayor gets to appoint someone at large.
They vote on any and all planning issues, but the City Council can overrule them.
For example, if Mike Harrah has to submit a request for a variance in order to keep his sign up on the Santora, the Planning Commission will review the request and vote on it.
This is a sad day for Santa Ana…Sean I believe has a deep conflict of interest for all citizens in Santa Ana, not only is he against the artist village but he has also voiced his prejudice against homosexuals..really santa ana this is the best you can do?

Sean is not anti-gay. In fact he was publicly against Prop. 8.
He had a conversation that was off the record, with Schoenkopf, who goes by Commie Girl, and it was taken out of context.
His friend, Ted Moreno, is not a supporter of the gay community for religious reasons.
It should be noted that this quote you references is very old. I think it dates back to the late 90’s. It certainly does not reflect how Sean feels today. He is not against the Artists Village but he does take issue with public subsidies of same.
Lastly, he already has enough support on the Council to be put on the Planning Commission. This effort to derail the appointment will go nowhere.
Gay Pride Festival in Centennial Park
September 03, 1989
As a citizen of Santa Ana who is actively involved in city government,
I am particularly interested in the homosexual festival proposed by
Orange County Cultural Pride.
Over 95% of the 2,000 citizens of Santa Ana that have expressed their
opinion to Mayor (Daniel E.) Young and the City Council regarding the
homosexual festival are strongly opposed to its taking place. While
this is a gauge of the level, or lack thereof, of acceptance of
homosexuality, it is not the basis for denying or revoking the permit.
The basis for denying the permit lies in existing city statutes. A
permit may be denied if the activity unreasonably interferes with or
detracts from the general public use and enjoyment of the park,
unreasonably interferes with or detracts from the public health,
safety, or welfare, is reasonably likely to result in violence to
persons or property, and will entail an extraordinary expense or
operation by the city.
Homosexuals have the right to do as they wish in their bathhouses and
bedrooms. Now, they want to desensitize the moral standards of our
community. This will be damaging to our children, families and
country.
Santa Ana has numerous satisfactory venues to express one’s political
and social beliefs. Centennial Park is not an appropriate site for
this highly controversial event. The city’s first duty is to serve its
citizens and to ensure their enjoyment of our parks.

1989? Seriously? You know Sean, like many people, has changed his mind on a lot of issues since then. In fact he and I both quit the GOP. He is today a Democrat and I am a Decline to State voter. Neither of us are social conservatives.

I think he is trying to take the high road. Honestly, he is not anti-gay. That last release you posted was 23 years old! Who hasn’t changed their minds in that timespan? Well, besides Jerry Brown.
Sean is being appointed by Sal Tinajero – the Councilman who introduced a motion in honor of Harvey Milk Day.
Here is a question for you to ponder – why don’t we have any gay bars or even a bar with a gay night – in downtown Santa Ana? I know Sean would support such a venture. Why hasn’t this happened yet?

I am pretty sure Proof has a gay night on Tuesday. and there is a gay themed theater, and of course all of us creative types like to be in touch with our opposite side so that we don’t get a little cookoo in the head.
