On Friday, November 6, 2020, the City of Santa Ana kicked off the tree-planting season and launched a new street tree services planting program to grow and manage the City’s urban forest. Members of the Washington Square Neighborhood Association and Santa Ana Public Works Street Tree Services staff planted the first tree of the program.

The event officially kicks off Public Works’ goal to plant 500 trees by June 2022. To meet this goal, the Public Works Agency collaborated with the California Urban Forests Council and West Coast Arborist and were awarded the “City Forest Renewal” funded through Cal FIRE’s Urban and Community Forestry Program. The grant will ensure funding for the planting of two trees for every one removed to continue the development of our urban forest. In order to reach the goal of 500 trees planted, Public Works staff anticipates planting 350 trees by Spring 2021 and an additional 150 trees in the Spring of 2022.

Public Works will use their Global Positioning System (GPS) tree inventory that identifies the entire City’s Street Trees inventory, as well as the vacant locations where trees have been removed over the past several years. Using the GPS for vacancy locations, City staff collaborated with the 64 Santa Ana Neighborhood Associations to develop a list of planting locations for this first round of planting 200 trees by the end of 2020. The 200 trees will be planted citywide so each City Neighborhood will have a tree or trees planted within their boundaries. We celebrated today in the Washington Square Neighborhood by planting a California Sycamore tree on Freeman Street. Over the next several months, we are excited to continue increasing the tree canopy in all of our neighborhoods by increasing aesthetics, providing welcomed shade, cleaner air and improving our mental and physical health.

Obras Públicas Inicia Programa De Plantación De Árboles

El viernes 6 de noviembre de 2020, la Ciudad de Santa Ana inició la temporada de plantación de árboles y lanzó un nuevo programa para cultivar y administrar el bosque urbano de la Ciudad. Los miembros de la Asociación de Vecindarios de Washington Square y el personal de servicios de árboles de Obras Públicas de la Ciudad de Santa Ana plantaron el primer árbol del programa.

El evento inicia oficialmente el objetivo de Obras Públicas de plantar 500 árboles antes de junio 2022. Para cumplir con este objetivo, la Agencia de Obras Públicas colaboró con el grupo California Urban Forests Council y West Coast Arborist y se les otorgó la “Renovación de bosques de la ciudad” financiada a través de programa Cal FIRE’s Urban and Community Forestry Program. La subvención garantizará el financiamiento para la plantación de dos árboles por cada uno que se quite para continuar el desarrollo de nuestro bosque urbano. Para alcanzar nuestra meta de plantar 500 árboles, el personal prevé plantar 350 árboles para la primavera de 2021 y 150 árboles adicionales en la primavera de 2022.
