Not affordable housing…

The Santa Ana City Council wil be conducting a public hearing at tonight’s Council meeting, to review a Housing Ordinance drafted by the Planning and Building Agency, which has to do with affordable housing.  The ordinance was approved by the Planning Commission on September 26, 2011 by a 7-0 vote.

The ordinance will amend Chapter 41 of the Santa Ana Municipal Code, adding housing opportunity standards and procedures to encourage the development of housing that is affordable to a range of households with varying income levels.

The goal of the new ordinance is to ensure future residential development projects contribute to the attainment of the affordable housing goals set forth in the housing element of the City’s general plan.

You can read tonight’s Council meeting agenda by clicking here.  Once you get in there look for item 75B as there is another document embedded that includes the Planning Agency’s report on the ordinance in question.

  1. The City says that they need this Affordable Housing Ordinance to apply City wide in order to capture affordable housing opportunities in redevopment areas.

That makes no sense, because affordable housing is already a state requirement for redevelopment areas.

This ordinance will discourage housing development. But I guess that is okay, because Santa Ana does not have adequate open/park space for current residents.
