Well I can’t say that I am surprised to see that Don Cribb is coming out against the purchase of the Santora building by Irvine’s Newsong Church.  Cribb has always been anti-family and now he is also showing himself to be anti-Christian.  He lives on my street, in the Park Santiago neighborhood.  I once heard him tell a neighborhood meeting that he wanted the city to get rid of the large picnic tables at Santiago Park.  Well of course he would posit that anti-family point of view.  That is par for the course when it comes to Cribb.

Cribb likes to call himself the founder of the Santa Ana Artists Village.  Well, it seems to have been his idea but there were a lot of people involved.  But his real vision went beyond embracing the arts.  The movement was really all about changing Santa Ana at its core and disenfranchising Latinos.

That Cribb was able to cajole our city leaders into using public money to advance his vision is disgusting.  Yes, the downtown has changed, but families and Latinos have been pushed out of the downtown area, which is what Cribb really intended all along.

Do you doubt what I am saying?  Well here is what Cribb himself had to say in an email posted on the Santora artists Facebook page:

I firmly believe that Newsong is singing a sweet one! It is intended to sound innocent and cooperative and vague as possible, for a reason! Newsong is not really committed to anything but their religious interests, survival, and growth. They are not in Santa Ana to support the arts as we known them, but for a redefinition that not only includes them, but to help establish themselves as a hub! They clearly intend to recruit outreach to children as a screen for bigger intentions!

Is this not yet obvious, because Newsong is a youth-oriented strategy to use a multi-denominational effort much like a Trojan horse! How dangerous might this situation really be? In whose interest would it be to offer a church, any church, the benefit of any doubt? After all the wordsmithing in their documents and press releases indicate they are willing to hide full intentions! Newsong is as dangerous as imaginable, and just to be safe and protect the Artists Village from unwelcome and potentially disastrous results, the organization, United Artists of Santa Ana, needs to step up and say loud and clear, “NO!” and continue SAYING “NO!” until the big bad wolf has retreated to ultra suburbia, Irvine, their home! Doesn’t anyone seriously question why they’ve appeared in Santa Ana all loving and sweet with proclamations of affection and bearing no arms? Are you kidding?

I say “BEWARE!” with profound and deep concern! And appreciate those with insightful alarm! In my view it is not misplaced!

GOOD LUCK!

Don Cribb

Santa Ana Council of Arts and Culture, President/Founder

Wow.  Cribb’s obvious hatred of Christians is simply disgusting and we as residents of Santa Ana should not tolerate this at all.

I was also disappointed by the reaction of Downtown, Inc’s Vicky Baxter:

Vicky Baxter, executive director of Downtown Inc., which promotes the downtown, said the organization is interested in learning Newsong’s intentions.

“Artists and businesses are scared of censorship, and we want to talk to the church about that,” she said. “It looks like church has done many acquisitions similar to this, and we don’t think this is new for them. It could be the best thing for the building, but we don’t know.”

With all due respect to Ms. Baxter, what Newsong intends to do with their property is none of her business – or anyone else’s.  The Santora building is a private property and Newsong can do what they want with it, period.

My advice to the Newsong executive board is to dismiss any and all artists who cannot or do not pay their rent in full, on time.  And they should be careful not to rent space to any overtly anti-Christian tenants.  People have the right to pursue hatred but that doesn’t mean Newsong should have to rent to them.  If you want to call that censorship, go ahead.  I call it property rights.

With redevelopment dead, it is high time for the people of Santa Ana to take back our downtown from Cribb and his fellow elitists.  Welcoming Newsong to the Santora building is a step in the right direction.

Is there a place for the arts in Santa Ana?  Of course.  But the artists need to separate themselves from the likes of Cribb – the sooner the better.

  1. Just think how much greater the Artist Village and Santa Ana could have been had you and Cribb simply united in “unholy” union and rid yourselves of all of your mutual fear and racism in one giant thrust! My God, we would no longer need to have all city sales and efforts go to building the Giant Penis Tower. Just tell Mill and Harrah to step aside and quite promoting that hands off, laisez faire, free enterprise “my money”, “my property” Crony Capitalism Corrupt Welfare Horesh*t. If you are all going to frickn Hell then you might as well git rid of your sexual repressions and political guilt before you go. You can stick your Penis Tower up your fake Assets and leave the rest of the community to a better more progressive future that they have fought so hard to achieve.

    1. I am not a racist. I have no problem with anyone of any race. I do however take umbrage at those who are anti-Mexican.

Mill has not been promoting anything. I am not sure what in the world you are talking about.

Harrah has the right to do with his property as he pleases, within the constraints of the law and the ballot measure the voters approved that allowed his One Broadway Plaza development to proceed.

Harrah’s tower will bring jobs and workers to our downtown area. Ironically you artists might actually benefit from that, if you can set aside your loony socialistic beliefs and go about making a living…

  2. Mill does not promote anything? Mill’s solution to everything is, “the market needs to determine if something survives”. O.k. there Mr. Mill. I wonder how the future is going to look when Santa Ana has absolutely nothing left except for pot clinics, illegal tattoo parlors, and bars that cater to County tourists that think they are safer partying there than on Revolution Ave in T.J. And then of course there is the Penis Tower! founded on free market principles? Not. Achieved or conceived through political manipulation only. Retail is dying on Broadway and probably throughout Downtown because of the hands off approach of the city “planners”, and over exuberant realtors, landlords and speculators. The Vision on an Artist Village is being left to die for the vision of what? Or the lack of vision of what?

    1. Well, like it or not the market does decide what businesses survive.

Retail has slowed because of the Obama/Bush recession which was compounded by Obama’s deportation of thousands of Mexican immigrants.

Cribb’s vision was to displace Latinos. Now that redevelopment is gone, good luck with that.

As for the artists, they are a bunch of left-wing kooks. Why should we subsidize them? If they cannot figure out how to survive that is their problem.

  3. a)We are figuring how to survive.
b)Why is Harrah displacing Latino Artists and other Artist with Korean Jesus Lovers, and displacing the unifying non-racist Arts Culture?
Answer = For the sake of a Corporate Penis Tower!

    1. Your racist and anti-Christian views are highly disturbing. Good luck surviving when our residents figure out where you are coming from.

  4. “As for the artists, they are a bunch of left-wing kooks. Why should we subsidize them? If they cannot figure out how to survive that is their problem.”

Good to know that you will not be supportive of kids who favor the arts or who are liberal in their views while in school. Since more than 80% of Latinos are democrat and Latino arts is of major importance to high schoolers nowadays – you are not a good fit for the School Board. At least we can thank you for announcing that now instead after you were elected.

    1. Oh you’re so clever, but of course I was talking about the Santora bunch that does nothing but cause trouble.

My oldest son is at UCLA. He is going to their film school. My daughter is a fashion designer. I played three musical instruments in my youth and worked in graphic design.

So you see I fully support the arts but I don’t support socialists who want us to subsidize them.

As for Latinos in this area, many are Democrats but very few are liberals.

  5. Socialism, Not. People that love their communities rule! I am probably one of a few Artists that is open and friendly and non-fearful of any Koreans that come into the Artists Village. That doesn’t mean that I need to promote them and their religious/business endeavors, and get all excited about the idea of 300 of them walking into the Artists Village at the same time to dance for Jesus.

  6. Go phuck urself. I feel sorryy for you. You need this blog to make you feel better bout urself ha ha ha ha

  7. What does this Don Cribb fellow do for a living? I’ve heard people say he fixes old furniture and others that he lives and has a “job” in West Hollywood? The first can’t pay much and the second should pay enough that he doesn’t have to live in a falling down house in Park Santiago! Art, don’t you live near him? What’s up with that shack where he lives? Why doesn’t the city make him fix it up? Don’t you wonder why a person like this hates Christians so much?

  8. The scary part is that NEWSONG is largely exempt form FEDERAL TAXES. A little info here would be helpful.

So they take the TAX FREE money and buy tangible investments further strengthening their foothold.

This is a definitive trend, especially with our public schools. Neither group, the artists or Newsong offer anything for the community.

    1. Interesting point. I guess on the positive side the Newsong Church will bring folks to the Downtown who might spend money on businesses in that area, including the restaurants. The artists are a draw too, but unlike the restaurants they hardly make any money.

If the artists were smart they would consider the fact that Newsong’s members are well to do for the most part. They could be patrons of the arts, but the artists are too busy insulting them to figure that one out.

  9. If it wasnt for the artist there would be no restruants there still only be dope feens with syrges on the side walks.

  10. I hate to break the news to you Mr. Blake but it was the tax dollars of the hard working people of Santa Ana that created what you see downtown, not the artists.

Dope fiends with syringes on the sidewalks? Is that the fallacy you were told?

Millions upon tens of millions of dollars were dumped into creating what you see downtown at the expense of most Santa Ana residents. Money that should’ve gone into parks, libraries and other services for our residents were handed out to the arts.

The people of Santa Ana are still waiting for a return on our investment.

  11. For someone with ART as their name, Perdoza sure has a lot of disrespect, anger, and racism towards it and the people that pursue it and live off of it.

So when the Yost went up and new businesses went it, displacing the subsidized, cant pay their rent mostly Latino businesses, all hell broke out about gentrification!

But by using your logic its the new owners property rights to do as they please. Double standard? So its seems racism against anyone not of Latin blood is okay with you.

    Hypocrisy at its finest.

    1. Not at all. But I have no respect for artists who want us to subsidize them while they go about attacking the very businesses they are trying to leach off.

What burned folks about the East End Promenade was that Latino owned businesses that were paying their rent were not allowed to renew their leases. The artists who aren’t paying their rent at the Santora better start looking for somewhere else to crash.

  12. Why don’t we just wait and give the chruch 5 years or so before we say if they are good or not for downtown. Time will tell.

  13. I pay my rent, and help you pay yours! Mr. Bad Art. I don’t like paying rent to advertise Original Mikes. So STick it tonight! and repent on Sunday.

  14. at: Admin is people like you that make “SOME ARTISTS” dope fiends.

at: Mr. Sean Mills I’ve seen the artists village first hand before the restaurants when all there was a hole in the wall coffee shop promoting poetry night and the first art walk made it comfortable for wankerz like you to feel safe walking around that area when on any other day you would probably crap your pants. try a lil love and compassion you might live a lil longer and make it a peachy place to be for the rest of us. 😉

  15. It’s interesting how people like Cribb talk about tolerance but that never applies when a Christian group wants to be involved in Santa Ana. Christians are the last group that Americans are allowed to openly discriminate against. Cribb and people like him are bullies who want to tell property owners who they can sell property to. They want downtown Santa Ana to be their little cultural playground and exclude those who might have a different world view IF that world view involves a Christian God. The silent majority of Santa Ana residents who believe Downtown Santa Ana is for everyone (including Christians) need to unite and stand up to bullies like Cribb.

  16. Don Cribb told the Voice of OC, “They [Newsong] want to proselytize. They want to add their two cents in a very unwelcome way.”

At least Newsong wants to add two cents. Cribb and the rest of his band of atheist bigots stole our two cents and then some.

  17. Mr. Blake,

I’ve lived in Santa Ana for more than 40 years and I have never been afraid to go to the downtown area. I worked at the corner of 4th and French for many years during the mid to late 80’s and walked throughout the area.

I remember going to watch the Tommy Hearns – Pepino Cuevas fight on closed circuit at the movie theatre downtown in June of 1980. No dope fiends, no syringes and no fear then.

There was also no Artist Village then.

It is clear that if it weren’t for taxpayer subsidies the Artist Village would not exist. The residents of Santa Ana have seen very little, if any, return on their major investment.

  18. Sean is mostly right, I would add one thing. The development of the artist village did succeed in moving “skid row” to the Civic Center area.

  19. Don Cribb is an appointed commissioner in Santa Ana and as such should be subject to the city’s code of ethics.

It is clear that his comments in regards to Newsong Church demonstrate a clear bias against and bigotry towards Christians and churches in general.

He should be tossed from ETAC as the result of this.

  20. @ Admin you sound like the bigot

@ Mr. Sean i know all the artist and they never seen a cent from tax dollers. So i sugest you get you facts streight. Your ignorent. You should talk to them first befor talking about them.

  21. Mr. Blake,

I have forgotten more about how the Artist Village was created than you yourself will ever know about it. You need to learn your history before entering a public forum and demonstrating how little you know.

I love being called “ignorent” by someone who can’t even spell the word correctly.

It was taxpayer subsidies that created the whole place, not actual hand outs to the wannabe artists “occupying” the place.

  22. First of all, Don Cribb is throwing allegations that are all speculation. He has NEVER been to Newsong nor taken the time to get to know them so how he can predict that this will be a disastrous situation. He only has a one track hateful mind and refuses to believe what they say and twists every word of theirs.

Second of all, “They clearly intend to recruit outreach to children as a screen for bigger intentions!” What is the problem with outreaching to children?! If he did any research on Newsong before throwing out all these ridiculous claims, he would know that Newsong has been involved in several organizations in Santa Ana for a while to protect the kids and assure a bright future for them (i.e. KidWorks, 511, laundry love, the burrito project). If he has a problem with supporting children to have an educated and successful future then he is more twisted than could be thought.

Third of all, it is truly sad to me to see how Don and so many of the artists protesting, truly believe it is impossible for anyone to have good intentions towards them, particularly Newsong. They clearly claims in several posts, they are not coming to destroy or change any of the arts nor the building. They have no interest in censorship, and support gay rights. They bought the building to preserve and assure it from anyone else buying it and destroying the arts inside. They have addressed every single issue thrown at them. Give them some slack and stop harassing them like barbarians.

It’s funny how people like Don are so quick to judge and say hurtful things about an organization they know nothing about and how Newsong has shown nothing but love and understanding towards them. ACT LIKE ADULTS. Btw, this is 2012, your racist Korean comments are uncalled for.

  23. Just for the record, Newsong gets its money from the congregation that believes in tithe, a 10% of each person’s income as a donation for certain causes. Also, many people from Newsong are well off and could potentially bring much business to the artists if they weren’t acting so hostile.

  24. Hostile? Who is Hostile? I totally want them to come in and buy one of my “Occupy Jesus” posters. I’ll give them free wine and won’t even try to pinch their butts at the same time.

  25. Lol mateo, @ Mr. Sean Mills you just hate us cuase you aint us. Please excuse my typos these smart phones isnt the easiest things to type from.

As far tax subsidies your right i dont know much bout that havent heard about it. Bot the current artist there hadn’t seen a cent from it everything is out of pocket expenses. And going broke to preserve our passions dreams & lively hoods & taking sh*t from a$$holes like you. Lets see you do that.?

  26. These folks seem to be quite angry and hostile…Perhaps Newsong can bring some peace and harmony into this community and into their hearts.

It appears that this religion of “art” that Mr. Cribb speaks of has brought a lot of bitterness, hatred and resentment. Mr. Blake is a prime example.

  27. I agree with Mr. Mill. Some people I know who know this Cribb character say he also posed nude for an artist in the artist village named Hockney or something like that. (Is it legal for this guy Hockney to do this?) They say this this supposed artist Hockney wrote a book and put a photo of the nude Mr. Cribb in the book! And now Mr Cribb wants to tell us that a church would be bad for downtown? Maybe Mr. Cribb needs to stay in West Hollywood where some people have said he wanders the streets.

  28. I can be as polite as you Mr. Mill. It is not that difficult. Don’t pat yourself on the back for the political correctness that has not always been your claim to fame.

  29. Cool then just open a damn r/c track Mill you got the power……it would be nice to have a hobby shop here Santa Ana …..but I keep seeing is kush Kingdoms everywhere…I’m not bashing but speaking the truth

  30. @ Mr. Mills & Admin i didnt reliize you guys were famous i just so your stars on hollywood blvd for best supportive actors as twiddle dee &twiddle dumb. Be carfull what you wish for cuase when the church moves in the ya’ll have nothing intresting to write about exept for shooting and lil kids killed in cross fire Rupert Murdok would be so proud of you

  31. @william blake: the reason why you guys haven’t seen any of the money is because you’re so close-minded towards anyone who doesn’t live the lifestyle you do. Aren’t the people who keep you alive actually have money and want to support your work? That’s just arrogance if you starve yourself based on your pride. Also, I guarantee that Christians have purchased some of your work and supported you without you even knowing they were Christians. You think of them as incapable of loving the arts, as robotic beings…we’re all human beings… we feel the same emotions, experience similar circumstances, and we’re all connected. The majority of the Newsong congregation are artists: they’re painters, writers, dancers, and all express their feelings through their passions. Same thing as you artists in the village do. Put your bias aside of the term “church” and see people as individuals, the same thing you demand as an artist.

@mateo: you should see the bigger picture of helping the community grow into an environment that is beneficial for families and children. Focusing only on the Artists Village is so selfish, and your hostility only prevents good things to come for the ENTIRE communtiy of Santa Ana.

  32. Nonprofits do not belong in prime retail areas, expecially at a time when the City is struggling to make ends meet through lower tax base.

  33. This particular nonprofit has a loyal congregation that is interested in the arts. That means they bring people to the area, which in turn promotes business in the area. Also, ocgrrl if you’re an artist then clearly you’re contradicting the whole protest with the purpose to PRESERVE the building, not see it as a “prime retail area.”

  34. You think new song is goin to give the city of s.a. any tpaxes lol theyre exempt. So stop making taxs the issue.”CHURCHES”, “RELIGIONS” , “CULTS”,& “FAITH BASED ORGINATIONS ” are the biggest pan handlers there are and are not required to pay taxes so put that in your pipe and smoke it. A rose is a rose by any other name it still a rose

  35. No! No! No! Do NOT speak for this Santa Ana resident! I do NOT support any religious organization moving into downtown Santa Ana and into the Santora! No way. The arts, artists and the amazing changes that have happened to downtown have done nothing but improve on an EPIC scale the look, the appeal and the future of our city! Everyone knows that it has. Santa Ana has become an evening destination for dinner, drinks and creative minds both in art and music. I support and will sign the petition to support the artists! As for Don Cribb-miss you! Dinner? Downtown Santa Ana? Hugs-Wendy

  36. “And they should be careful not to rent space to any overtly anti-Christian tenants. People have the right to pursue hatred but that doesn’t mean Newsong should have to rent to them. If you want to call that censorship, go ahead. I call it property rights.”……. Hmmmmmmm

You should check 42 U.S.C. § 3604 : US Code – Section 3604: Discrimination in the sale or rental of housing and other prohibited practices to see if your statement is not in violation of the federal law. See http://codes.lp.findlaw.com/uscode/42/45/I/3604

    1. No it doesn’t as I don’t own the building and am not involved in leasing space there.

That said it is likely that the anti-Christians at the Santora will eventually have to move for lack of paying their rent.

  37. “No it doesn’t as I don’t own the building and am not involved in leasing space there.”…… Hmmmmmm

The ownership is relevant. It is your unlawful believe which you are promulgating which makes you once again lawless.

It is like saying they should kill artists.

  38. I love Christians. I love anti-christians. I love new Songers. I love New Santanistas. Occupy Jesus Baby! Occupy or Die. I called Caribou today. My rent check was received. It must have been divine intervention.

  39. “That said it is likely that the anti-Christians at the Santora will eventually have to move for lack of paying their rent.”……. Hmmmmmmm

If they can prove your statement true they will mot and Christians will have to pay to artists

  40. I have no clue what Christian versus nonChristian has to do with this economic argument. We want property tax paying owners in the downtown. The Culturo does not own anything, so while they don’t pay a business tax, the property tax is still being paid.

    1. What you want doesn’t matter. Unless you have the money to buy the Santora, which you don’t.

By the way, the City Council will be getting rid of the PBID soon so that will nullify the property tax argument.

  41. Oh boy. If that happens, the city goes back to the barrio status. Why are you all so afraid of success? Idiots. Oh, the Art Walk was a blast toniggt. So good to hang with the big wig from Downtown Inc! Love her! Oh, thank you Don-the scene was once again, awesome.

  42. Well, I found this discussion on Google. I have to say as a prospective local gallery and business owner, that I am not impressed. I don’t understand why council member Benavides is trying to get his church involved in the arts district. I don’t understand why locals in the Santiago community are so upset with Don, besides his emotional reaction to what he worked so hard to create. I can say that I’m very pleased with his efforts to develop the empty lot that now houses Mothers, Z-Pizza, Geisha, etc. (I actually went to that meeting in the neighborhood and couldn’t believe that it would actually get built.) I read his comments. I don’t see how they are anti-Christian, more “why put a church in the middle of an arts district”. In any case, may the truth out! It’s good people are talking. Hope y’all keep it civil. Curious as to what the Admin’s platform is for local public education. Doesn’t sound like much of a public works supporter…maybe I’m wrong. How about focusing on getting locals to send their children to the local school in Santiago? Seems like that is a more immediate concern.

    1. My kids all go to local public schools. Hoover, the school in the Santiago neighborhood, is not a school I would recommend to anyone. My 8 year old is a GATE student at John Muir Fundamental Elementary, which is an award-winning school.

Cribb’s comments are clearly anti-Christian but you don’t see that because you are too.

Redevelopment wasn’t public works. It was handouts to developers and special interests. Good riddance.
